Selecting a Gear

Selecting a Gear

To shift out of P (Park), the brake pedal must be pressed.

Move the gear selector lever on the right side of the steering wheel up or down to change gears. The Driver Display displays the selected gear.

Note: If you try to shift into a gear that the current driving speed prohibits, a chime sounds and the gear will not change.

R (Reverse)

Push the lever all the way up and release. You can only shift into R (Reverse) when the vehicle is stopped or moving less than 4 mph (7 km/h).

Note: The vehicle speed in R (Reverse) is limited to 15 mph (20 km/h).

N (Neutral)

Push the lever up or down to the first position and release to shift into N (Neutral). N (Neutral) allows the vehicle to roll freely.

The vehicle automatically shifts into P (Park) when you open the driver’s door.

D (Drive)

Push the lever all the way down and release. You can shift into D Drive when the vehicle is stopped or moving less than 4 mph (7 km/h) in R (Reverse).

P (Park)

With the vehicle stopped, press the end of the gear selector to engage the parking lock in the front Electric Drive Unit (EDU). Whenever the vehicle is in P (Park), the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) applies when the driver’s seat belt is unfastened and the driver’s door is opened. See Electronic Parking Brake (EPB).

Note: If the gear is not in P (Park) when the driver’s seat belt is unfastened and the driver’s door is opened, the vehicle alerts you.
